Join vocalist Evelyn Gordon and pianist Marietta Cloud for a Stressbuster Sing-a-Long at SoHo Grill & Racquet Club in Cullowhee Friday night, May 2, from 6:30-8 p.m. A medley of patriotic songs will be included and song sheets will be provided.
THE FINAL LIBRARY PERFORMANCE....of the North Carolina Humanities Council-sponsored "Birdell" by Gary Carden will be this Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at the Jackson County Public Library. Carden said Sunday's event is a rescheduling of the March 30 snowed-out performance. Following the one-woman performance by veteran actress Elizabeth Westall, humanities scholar Scott Philyaw of Western Carolina University's history department will join Carden in hosting a discussion of "Birdell" with the audience.
THANKS TO RAY MENZE...president of the Jackson County Visual Arts Society, for judging the entries in our annual Mountain Spring photo contest. Thanks also to everyone who entered this year's competition. The variety and beauty of the 50-plus entries made Menze's task a difficult one. The photographs entered in this year's sixth annual contest are displayed in the windows of The Herald building on Main Street.
CANEY FORK...community will hold a litter cleanup Saturday, May 3, in conjunction with the N.C. Department of Transportation's annual statewide spring Litter Sweep 2003. Caney Fork, recently recognized by the DOT as having one of the best Adopt-A-Highway groups in Jackson County, has picked up roadside litter for years, collecting 70 bags of litter in its March 1 pick up. The community's litter pick up program was featured in the most recent issue of "Litterature," a biannual newsletter published by the Office of Beautification Programs of the N.C. DOT. WestCare Health System Foundation invites the community to kickoff the fifth annual "Spirit of the Smokies" car show Friday, May 2, at 3 p.m. in the Harris Regional Hospital lobby. Proceeds benefit the Cardiac Services Fund. Refreshments will be served. For additional information, contact the foundation office 586-7669.

The Heritage Festival is a juried show, and all wares will be produced by the artistans. A limited number of food booths are also being sought. "With the wide array of art and crafts, food, and entertainment, the Dillsboro Heritage Festival has always been a well-attended event and should be well worth the while of any artisans wishing to attend," an organizer said. Contact Dillsboro Merchants Association at 586-3198 for an application. All applications must be received by May 20.
