HARRISON CONSTRUCTION ...

Co. on Macktown Road, Dillsboro, invites you to an open house Saturday, April 28, featuring van tours of the newly-remodeled plant, free souvenirs, hot dogs and drinks, door prizes, and entertainment by Randy Flack. "We want to give back to the community so everything at our open house will be free," said community relations manager Ronnie Barker. "We've tried to improve our image, environmentally and as a good neighbor." Harrison has made upgrades that total $500,000. In addition to a new entrance, they've added a paved area, new office and new scales. The company also has a new water bath, uniquely designed for them. As a truck approaches the scales, the tires run through a water trough that washes off all the debris. Now none of Harrison's trucks entering the highway leave dirt or mud on the road. The water drains back into the pump station, which pumps it into the pit for recycling and reuse. "We're doing this on the Greening Up the Mountains Day because we care about the environment, too," said Barker who added that a big sandbox with Tonka trucks will be available for children to play with.

THE NORTH CAROLINA ...

Division of Forest Resources is asking everyone to be careful when enjoying the beautiful spring weather this weekend. Spring fire season is beginning to spark up once again.Brisk winds, lower humidity, dry conditions and warming temperatures develop ideal conditions for potentially higher fire activity throughout the state. The small amount of precipitation that the state received this past week has not been significant enough to keep fires from occurring but has given people a false sense of security. Because of the current fire threat in the state, it is important that people make sure they have water nearby to completely douse any fire they build. They also need to clear any debris around the fire. NCDFR would also like to urge state residents to establish a fire safety area around their home by removing flammable vegetation and leaves for at least 30 feet from the house, storing firewood and other combustible materials at least 30 feet away from the house and removing limbs that overhang roofs and chimneys.
