Conservation Corps was a national organization in which 3 million men served in all states and territories from 1933 to 1942. The Online Civilian Conservation Corps Museum is seeking the stories about the CCCs, CCC Enrollees, staff, or technical advisors for publication to this online historical resource. DOUBLE YOUR CHANCES TO WIN ...
Enter your best spring photos in two local contests. The Sylva Herald's annual Mountain Spring photo contest deadline is Wednesday, April 11. Pictures must be a minimum of 5-by-7 inches and may not be computer-enhanced. Each entrant may submit two photos. Winners in The Herald's contest will be displayed during the Saturday, April 28, Greening Up the Mountains downtown Sylva festival. THE NEW BUILDING ...
at the east of the Barkers Creek straight on U.S. 74/441 will be another Elders' Superette. Charles Elders is constructing a 50-foot by 60-foot metal building that will include a native stone front. The new store is just to the left of Charles' home. Charles and his son Dewayne will offer Amoco gasoline products, groceries and feed. They plan to open around May 1. Their other store is on U.S. 441 between Gateway and Cherokee across the highway from the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. They opened it in 1986.

screenings will be offered by Jackson County's Interagency Preschool Coordinating Council Tuesday, April 10, from 8:30 until 11:30 a.m. at the Family Resource Center in Webster and Tuesday, April 24, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Cashiers Child Development Center in Cashiers. CULLOWHEE ...
Presbyterian Church has recently begun weekly airing of its Sunday worship services. The times of viewing are spaced throughout the week, with the first showing Sunday evenings at 8 p.m. on the local access cable channel WDLB. The Rev. Sam Hale and the congregation invite the community to join them for worship at 11 a.m. Sunday and for Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. in addition to viewing the services on WDLB. Resource Center, in cooperation with several community agencies, is sponsoring a father-child photo contest. Entries are due at the Family Resource Center in Webster (P.O. Box 250, Webster, N.C. 28788) by Wednesday, April 25. Photos can be black and white or color, any size, and should depict positive father-child interactions such as playing together, working together or reading together. The photos will be displayed at the Greening Up the Mountains Festival in Sylva on Saturday, April 28. Photos will not be returned. for spring planting, Gregg Thomas of Country Collections has a great deal for area non-profits. Thomas has 8,000 donated 2-year-old trees in gallon pots that must be distributed to non-profit agencies in Jackson County. HUNTER LIBRARY ...
at Western Carolina University will celebrate National Library Week, April 1-7, 2001. The library staff will hold an open house Wednesday, April 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served, and exhibits focusing on the important events in the history of Hunter Library and libraries around the world will be on display. Tours of the library will be offered. The exhibits will be mounted in the Hunter Library's exhibit cases throughout the month of April.
A POWER OUTAGE ...
will affect an area near the Western Carolina University campus when electrical service is be shut off to residents of Edgewater and Ben Battle roads Tuesday, April 3, while the Western Carolina University physical plant installs new power lines and conducts maintenance on existing lines. The power outage will take place between 8:30 a.m. and noon, said William Manware, WCU physical plant assistant director. Anyone with questions may contact Manware in the physical plant office at 227-7442.
