BRENDA OOCUMMA ...

of Cherokee has been appointed to the N.C. Employment Securities Commission. She is chairman of the Board of Advisors for the Tribal Casino Gaming Enterprise, responsible for management and development of casino operations owned by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Oocumma received her bachelor's degree in education from Western Carolina University in 1977 and her master's in business administration from WCU in 1983. She will be sworn in today (Thursday) during the commission's meeting in Raleigh.


REG MOODY JR ...

of Moody Funeral Home in Sylva recently qualified for recertification as a certified funeral service practitioner from the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice. To initially receive this award, Moody had to complete a 180-hour program of continuing education activities and events. In addition, the practitioner is required to accumulate 20 hours per year for recertification. Credits are awarded by the Academy for work leading to personal and/or professional growth in four areas: Academic activities; professional activities; career review (for retroactive credit); and community and civic activities.


HIGHLANDS PIPES AND DRUMS ...

led by Pipe Major Michael Waters of Cullowhee, will participate in the largest gathering of bagpipers and drummers in history next month. The group will attend Pipefest 2002 in New York City's Central Park on Tartan Day, April 6. The event is a benefit for the Marie Curie Cancer Foundation and also for the New York Fire and Police Department pipe bands. More than 10,000 musicians are expected.


CLARIFICATION ...

The caption under a picture on page 1C of this edition indicates the next Habitat for Humanity house site is located on Hampton Road. Though some might think the property is on Woody Hampton Road, which intersects N.C. 107 at Cope Creek Plaza, the Habitat site is actually on College Hill's Hampton Street near Sylva's downtown area.


THE COMMUNITY ...

is invited to a flag-burning ceremony today (Thursday) at 3:15 p.m. at Smoky Mountain High sponsored by the administration and Student Council. Participating in the ceremony will be Timara Barker, Student Council president; Crystal Moore, senior Girl Scout; and Assistant Principal Tinnie Salzano. The high school flag is showing signs of wear, and students and administrators want to properly honor it before it is replaced, Barker said.


ALAN BERKOW ...

who operated the Blue Squirrel Cafe in Cullowhee for several years, will reopen his restaurant in Sylva between Western Carolina Chrysler Plymouth Dodge and the old Shell station. Alan, who expressed appreciation to all who have helped him in his relocation effort, said he "can't wait to get cooking again" and hopes to open his Sylva restaurant in April.


A REALTORS WORKSHOP ...

HARRAH'S Cherokee Casino premiered 12 "Live Video Blackjack" table games this past Monday. These are video blackjack games that employ live dealers to facilitate wagers and payoffs with chips in a more traditional table game atmosphere. "We believe that Live Digital Blackjack played in a table game atmosphere represents an exciting new game that combines player skill with customer interaction in a sensational venue not previously available at Harrah's Cherokee Casino," said Pat Dennehy, general manager at Harrah's. "This is an opportunity to expand our games, create a new level of excitement and provide more job opportunities for local people," said Leon Jones, principal chief of the Eastern Band. NEW CENTURY ...

Scholars, a joint scholarship program of local school systems and Southwestern Community College, is featured in the September-December 2001 issue of Appalachia, the journal of the Appalachian Regional Commission. NCS recently received a grant from the ARC to expand the successful three-county program to other locations in the region.
