SONJA HAYNES...
city executive for Macon Bank's Sylva branch, is in Guatemala this week for final planning with Rotary from the Western North Carolina District. A total of eight individuals from four different clubs arrived in the highland town of Huehuetenango Monday and will stay through March 14. Along with Sylva, the other Rotarian clubs that will be represented on the trip are Franklin, Franklin Day Break and Pisgah Forest. Rotarians take a final planning trip before they apply for grants to fund a district project. There are two to three projects to choose from, one of which is a mobile vision clinic. This would involve the purchase of a vehicle and putting together a team of physicians to staff the clinic. The planning trip also continues an ongoing Rotary wheelchair distribution project.
CORRECTIONS:
In our picture story on page 1C about the 210th Military Police Co., PFC Melissa Townsend's mother is listed as Julie, rather than Julia, Townsend. Also, in a photo on page 8C, Christina Burdick's first name is spelled incorrectly and the name of her baby is listed incorrectly as well. Christina is actually holding her infant son, Hunter, rather than her daughter, Skylar. The Herald regrets the errors.
CLARIFICATION:
Alert readers may notice that in a story about academic awards at Southwestern Community College that appears on page 6C, Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Chairman and Cullowhee firefighter Mickey Luker is identified as "Boyce" Luker. There's a reason for that: "Boyce" is Mickey's given name. When we asked him about it, he told us that while he's officially Boyce, he's always been known by the nickname "Mickey."
