PROJECT CARE ...

a program of the Jackson County Department of Aging, is featured in an article in the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust 2000 Annual Report. Project CARE (Community in Action to Reach the Elderly) uses a cooperative team of staff and volunteers to provide wheelchair ramps for local elderly and disabled persons. Without the ramps, many county residents would be virtually homebound. Project CARE supervisor Richard Smith has devised a method of building ramps in sections that can be recycled to another location. Also, since sections can be built ahead of time, the waiting period for a ramp has been significantly reduced.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY ...

is near and WCU's Kappa Alpha is turning green all over. That means the Muscular Dystrophy Association's annual shamrock sale is here. It's a way for you to help children and adults win the fight against Muscular Dystrophy. When you see a WCU Kappa Alpha student selling shamrocks, all you have to do is donate $1 to MDA and sign a shamrock mobile. Your lucky shamrock will be displayed through St. Patrick's Day at WCU Kappa Alpha. Every shamrock bought brings MDA scientists one step closer to developing more treatments and, soon, cures. For more information, call Logan Summers, WCU Kappa Alpha, at 293-3072. Report them via the Internet at www.dot.state.nc.us/litterbug to North Carolina's Department of Motor Vehicles. You will need to know the license number of the offending vehicle, and include the date, time and location of the littering incident.
