JEFF HEDDEN...has been appointed by President George W. Bush to the position of U.S. Marshal for Eastern Tennessee. He received full Senate confirmation Feb. 8.The U.S. Marshals Service, the oldest law enforcement agency in the country, is charged with the protection of the federal courts, judges and witnesses; executing federal warrants; apprehension of federal fugitives; housing and transportation of federal prisoners; asset management and forfeitures; and enforcing court orders and legal process as directed, among other duties. |

Hedden, originally a Kings Mountain native, graduated from Appalachian State University in 1976. He worked with the Department of Interior's National Park Service until he joined the marshals in 1983. He and his wife, Kathy, live in Greeneville, Tenn., and have a son, Allen Atchley, a third-year medical student at the University of Tennessee at Memphis. Hedden is descended from a well-known Sylva family. He is a grandson of the late Jeff Hedden, a Sylva barber from 1925 until 1983, and the late Eula Hedden. Marshal Hedden's parents, Joe and Frances Hedden, reside in Kings Mountain. Catherine Crawford of Sylva is Hedden's great aunt.
CHEROKEE BOTTLED WATER...captured the gold medal at the 12th annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Contest held Feb. 23 in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. The bottled water of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians shared the top prize in the Purified Water category with Blue Moon Water Systems of Brenton, Manitoba, Canada.This year's Berkeley Springs competition featured more than 80 bottled water entries from 19 U.S. states, five Canadian provinces, and six other foreign countries. Cherokee was the only U.S. entry to win a gold medal. The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians created Cherokee Bottled Water in 1998. THE CHALET INN...will again participate in a spring bed and breakfast sampler. Chalet owners George and Hanneke Ware will join the Folkestone Inn in Bryson City and the Hawksdene House in Andrews to offer a three-night package that will provide guests a premiere bed and breakfast experience. STORYTIME...this Saturday at City Lights will feature a Dr. Seuss theme in honor of the beloved author's March 2 birthday. The event begins at 11 a.m.
SYLVA ROTARY CLUB...members, in keeping with Rotary International's theme for 2001-02, "Mankind is Our Business," made the following contributions during the past year:- Provided $1,000 to New Century Scholars. - Ate soup from Rotary International and donated the usual $400 cost of their weekly meal to world hunger efforts, feeding some 1,200 people. - Collected more than $1,300 for disaster relief efforts after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. - Purchased 11 wheel chairs to send to Guatemala for crippled children and adults through a worldwide Rotary effort. - Contributed $100 to the Ecuadorian Relief Fund. - Contributed $124 to Hospice in memory of Archie Crawford. - Is currently underwriting expenses for an exchange student at Smoky Mountain High.
BEGINNING MONDAY...March 4, Duke Power customers in Cherokee will be able to pay bills at a new location. The Cherokee payment center will be Showtime Movie Rental and Radio Shack at 80 Frontier Drive. The new location will offer additional conveniences, including courtesy phone, ample parking, and extended hours of operation and will issue meter bases for new and modified services. Customer service hours will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. The local Duke number for Cherokee and Swain County, 488-2116, remains unchanged. It can be used for routine business 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and to report outages or emergencies 24 hours per day.In late 2000, the company announced plans to begin changing locations where customers pay bills in person by moving to third party pay agents. "We are committed to providing our customers excellent service that is consistent, using the most efficient and cost-competitive options," said Fred Alexander, Duke Power district manager. "Moving to pay agents is an option that's been used by other utilities to streamline processes while providing customers additional flexibility." Duke Power's Nantahala Area serves 61,000 customers in a 1729-square-mile area of southwestern North Carolina that includes Jackson, Swain, Macon, Cherokee and Graham counties. Duke Power purchased Nantahala Power and Light in 1988, and NP&L became part of Duke Power in 2000. More information about Duke is available on the Internet at www.dukepower.com.
THE USDA RURAL,..Development Office in Macon County will move to a new location March 4. The office will move to the former health department building at 195 Highlands Road in Franklin. The telephone number, (828) 524-3175, will not change, but callers may experience some difficulty during the change to the new office.
NOMINATIONS...are now open for the prestigious North Carolina Award, the highest civilian honor presented by the state. This award recognizes significant contributions of individuals over time in four categories: fine arts, literature, public service and science. Candidates are North Carolinians who have lived and or worked in the state.Award nominations may include biographies, resumes and letters of support and may be submitted by anyone. They should be sent to the North Carolina Awards Committee, 4601 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699. Nominations are open through April 15.
