JEFF GRAY ...

Jeff Gray of Raleigh, formerly of Sylva, was recently appointed to the Rules Review Commission by N.C. House Speaker Jim Black. The commission is made up of 10 citizens appointed by the General Assembly to review all administrative rules proposed by state government agencies. "I am pleased to have someone of Jeff Gray's experience in administrative law and state government serving on the commission," said Black. Gray was recommended by Rep. Phil Haire of Sylva. A former assistant attorney general, Gray is a member of the Raleigh law firm of Holt York McDarris, LLP where he concentrates his practice in administrative law, civil litigation and governmental and legislative affairs. The Rules Review Commission reviews the hundred of regulations issued each year by state agencies. The commission is unique in North Carolina, and no other state has anything quite like it. The Raleigh News & Observer recently described the 10 members of the commission as "among the powerful people in North Carolina government." Gray is the son of Herald Publisher Jim Gray. He and his wife, Amy, have two daughters, 5-year-old Eliza and 1-year-old Hannah.

SHERIFF JIM CRUZAN ...

has passed along a warning. If you get a call from someone who claims to represent the telephone company and asks for your help in conducting a test, beware. People are usually asked to help with the test by dialing nine (9), zero (0), pound sign (#) and then hang up. If you do so, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long-distance calls billed to your phone number. So be aware of this ploy and do not press 90# for anyone.
