HENRY DOWLING ...

unit manager for the N.C. Independent Living Rehabilitation Program in Sylva, will retire Sept. 1, after more than 33 years with the agency. Dowling joined the vocational rehabilitation staff in 1967 as a rehabilitation counselor. He was promoted to head the Independent Living in 1993.

MAVIS BEACON ...

features former area residents Mike Gammon and Claire Hamilton, who grew up in Sylva and attended Smoky Mountain High School. They relocated to California, where they were joined by Javier Dura. After playing all over the West coast they moved to Austin, Texas. They have returned to Western North Carolina to record their second album at SpiritSound Studios, with producer Victor Hamilton, Claire's father. Upcoming area performances include The Beer Garden in Asheville, Saturday, Sept. 2, at 9 p.m.; J. Edwards in Cullowhee, Friday, Sept. 8, at 10 p.m.; and KJ's in Bryson City, Saturday, Sept. 9, at10 p.m.

of the 1940 flood that appear in this issue are courtesy of Herbert Gibson. The film lay forgotten and undeveloped for some 40 years. Some of the pictures were first used in The Sylva Herald in August 1980 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Tuckaseigee River's greatest flood.

CITY LIGHTS BOOKSTORE ...

is hosting a special one-day sidewalk sale of used books this Saturday, Sept. 2. The selection will include all genres, including romance, mystery, science fiction, general fiction and children's books. Refreshments and balloons will be provided, and shoppers can register for free gifts and browse inside the store through City Lights' improved slection of rare and hard-to-find books in the used book room.

FIRST UNION BANK ...

which sponsors Jackson County's annual Teacher of the Year Award, the Ben Craig Outstanding Educator Award, is a longtime supporter of education. Since 1977, bank employees have volunteered more than 2 million hours in school classrooms through First Union's Time Away from Work for Education initiative. First Union has donated more than $475,000 in grant money to Teacher of the Year programs.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY ...

is currently accepting applications for their homebuilding partnership program, a Christian housing ministry financed through private donations that utilizes volunteer labor. Habitat builds decent, affordable housing for families in need. To qualify, you must currently live in Jackson County, have the ability to make low monthly payments, have a housing need, and be willing to invest a minimum of 500 "sweat hours" in the building the home. Applications are available at the Jackson County Public Library, the Department of Social Services, the Family Resource Center, and United Christian Ministries on Skyland Drive. Deadline for receipt of applications has been extended to Sept. 30. For more information, call 293-0271 or 586-9050.

of In Zone Tanning and Gifts is selling her business. New owners Pat and Mike Sluder of Sylva will take over Thursday, Sept. 7. Cassle expressed appreciation to her customers for their loyalty and support over the years.
