ASHLEY CO. -

celebrated "Shirley Burrell Day" July 27. The Sylva company had a cook out and covered-dish lunch on its front lawn to honor the retirement and 15 years of dedicated service of Shirley Burrell of Webster. She began her career in the marching band headwear division and was instrumental in the development and improvement of sewing techniques required to maintain Ashley's high standard of quality. General Manager Bill Schutters, left, and Vice President Mike Trull, right, presented a certificate of appreciation to Burrell. Also present to congratulate Burrell was company President William Marsden. Ashley, one of Sylva's leading employers, is currently expanding and recruiting new employees to meet the demands for their "Made In the USA" products. The company plans to add 20 new employees, and anyone interested in starting a career with a company dedicated to American products should contact Ashley's human resource department.

AMERICAN RED CROSS . . .

needs blood donors. Give blood today (Thursday) at during the drive at Western Carolina University from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Grandroom of the University Center. SMOKY MOUNTAIN HIGH'S PTO is seeking donations both large and small for an upcoming silent auction fund-raiser. If you would like to help, call Susan Karcher at 631-1212 for pickup or drop off items at Sylva Chiropractic next door to Farm Bureau. Those making donations are asked to attach a business card with the approximate value of the item.

COUNTRY SENSATION . . .

Jo Dee Messina will appear at Harrah's Cherokee Pavilion Thursday, Aug. 17, at 8 p.m. Messina set the record for most weeks in the Top 30 (35 weeks with "Bye, Bye") and then tied it with "I'm Alright." She was recently nominated for best female vocalist by the Academy of Country Music and has received two prestigious Country Music Association award nominations. Tickets go on sale Aug. 7 and can be purchased by calling 1-800-HARRAHS. Tickets are $25.

JAMES OWEN . . .

of Sylva was recently named a "Shining Star" at Harrah's Cherokee Casino for providing great service and promoting teamwork. The lead sound technician in the entertainment division of the marketing department, Owen has been with Harrah's since its opening day in 1997. Employees nominate co-workers for the monthly awards. JASON BEMBRY,

son of Wally and Anne Bembry of Sylva, will present four sermons Saturday, Aug. 12, and Sunday, Aug. 13, at the Sylva Church of Christ. He is now attending Harvard University, and he and his wife, Faye, have two children.
