GREAT SMOKY . . .

Mountains Railroad has added a new car. The railroad has acquired the former Powhatan Arrow Club Car, meticulously restored it and placed it into service as the MacNeill Club Car. Built in the 1940s for the Norfolk & Western Railway, the car ran of N&W's premier passenger line until 1982 when N&W merged with Southern Railway to form the Norfolk-Southern Line. GSMR obtained the car at a 1995 auction. Fine woodwork, new lighting, carpet and upholstered seating have been added. Club cars are climate-controlled for passengers' comfort, with parlor seating and complimentary soft drink and snack. For more information, call 1-800-872-4681 or visit online at www.gsmr.com.

ALMOND TWIRLERS . . .

will hold a dance Thursday, July 27, at 8 p.m. at the old Whittier School. NEED A TELEPHONE book? The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce has more than 500 - and a very limited amount of storage. They have the new 2000-01 four-county directories as well as local GTE books. If you need one, go by the Chamber office on Central Street 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday or 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
