City Lights Bookstore . . .in Sylva will host a breakfast party for those who have preordered the new Harry Potter book, which officially goes on sale at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, July 8. The party gets under way at 7 a.m. (before the store opens for the general public). Due to limited space, preregistration is required, said bookstore owner Joyce Moore. To add your name to the list, call City Lights at 586-9499 and reserve a book and indicate you wish to attend the breakfast party. "Fans have been waiting for months for this new volume by J.K. Rowling, the fourth in the Harry Potter series, to be completed," Moore said. |

GARY CARDEN . . .said he had a number of calls after last week's story on Renfro Valley. Several people sang him the complete version of "They Cut Down the Old Pine Tree" over the telephone, he said. Carden wants all his readers to know that the Asheville DJ's name was Reed Wilson, and not Red Wilson as we accidentally typed. Wilson had quite a radio following around Sylva, Carden said, and his callers were quick to point out the mistake.FREQUENT LETTERwriter Frank Young of Cullowhee called to ask us to warn readers to beware of a widespread scam. Several in our area have gotten recent calls from individuals purporting to represent the N.C. Highway Patrol Benevolent Fund and seeking contributions. According to 1st Sgt. Jeff Winstead of the N.C. Highway Patrol, "The North Carolina State Highway Patrol does not endorse and is not affiliated with any organization that solicits money. The N.C. Highway Patrol is supported by solely by tax dollars and receives none of the contributions made to any of these organizations. The N.C. Highway Patrol does not know how these organizations spend solicited money and any decision to contribute is a personal one." |
