SISTERS GAIL STILLWELL COOPER and Cathy Stillwell Gibson...

have purchased the Starlight Motel in Whittier and renamed it the Nostalgic Starlight Motel. The two plan a grand opening Saturday, June 17, complete with vintage cars and a performance by Elvis Presley impersonator Chris Monteith. "Elvis" will arrive in a pink-and-white '55 Sunliner. The sisters urge everyone to come early and enjoy bottled Coca-Cola, peanuts and popcorn while awaiting Elvis's arrival. Monteith will give a free performance and cut the ribbon on the motel's recently completed Elvis theme room. For more information, call the motel at 497-5936.


WHAT'S THE SCOOP?...

ice cream shop opened Wednesday at 642 W. Main Street in Sylva, next to the Jewelry Outlet. Owned by Linda and Bill Haggard of Webster, the shop is open from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday-Saturday. What's the Scoop? will serve Mayfield ice cream, soft serve, flavored coffees, muffins, fountain drinks, milkshakes, shaved ice and more. Bill, vice chancellor for student affairs at Western Carolina University, and Linda, part-time youth direction at Sylva First United Methodist Church, have lived in Jackson County for almost nine years and have twin daughters, Amy and Sarah, who are sixth-graders at Cullowhee Valley School. THE PLANT PLACE...

is a new nursery on the corner of Skyland Drive and North Beta Road. It's operated by Debbie Stanley and features perennials, annuals, varigated dogwoods, Japanese maples and water fountains. Special orders are welcome.


VENDORS...

interested in a booth at Sylva's downtown Fourth of July celebration should call Phyllis Foxx at 586-2512. Cost is $25 or $15 for non-profit organizations. Independence Day festivities will start around 5 p.m. and will include a bingo game, bake sale and vendor booths. Live music will be by Southernbourne of Asheville, Smoky Mountain Drum'n'Bass of Cullowhee and The Willing Servants of Sylva. The evening will conclude with the traditional fireworks display from the old courthouse lawn.


GENEVA WELCH...

of Qualla will be honored by a gathering of family and friends on the occasion of her 90th birthday. The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Qualla Community Center, located across from the old Qualla School. Everyone is invited. For more information, call 497-2490. It is asked that gifts be omitted.


SHIRLEY BUCHANAN...

of Fairview School was recently chosen Jackson County's School Bus Driver of the Year. The award is sponsored by the N.C. Petroleum Marketers Association and Morgan Engergy.

THE ALMOND TWIRLERS

will host western square dances Thursday, June 22, and Thursday, June 29, at the old Whittier School. Both will begin at 8 p.m. and feature caller Marty Northrup. Carol Pound will lead the line dancing. For more information, call 488-6027.


ELECTRIC FANS

are available to the county's elderly through Operation Fan - Heat Relief, a special project made possible by donations from Duke Energy Foundation, Carolina Power and Light Co., North Carolina Power and Valassis Communications, Inc. The Division of Aging of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services is managing the project. Older residents who meet the program's guidelines may obtain fans through their local department on aging. For information, contact the department on aging at 586-8562.
