THE MOVIE "WHERE THE HEART IS"...

opened Friday, April 28, in theatres across the county and is now showing at the Quin Theatre in Sylva. The book was written by Billie Letts and selected by Oprah as a "Book of the Month." Billie appeared on the Oprah show last year. Many of you met Billie last summer at a book signing at City Lights Bookstore here in Sylva. She and her husband, Dennis, spent the summer in Maggie Valley. They'll be returning again this summer to visit family - Ray Don, Mary Jane and Brad Letts. On April 20 the governor of Oklahoma declared it "Billie Letts Day" and a premiere of the movie was held in Oklahoma City.

CODY BLANTON, 8-YEAR-OLD SON...

Master Chief Petty Officer Ray M. and Carla Daves Blanton of San Diego, Calif., has been evaluated to attend the Gifted and Talented Education Program in the San Diego School District starting in the third grade. Cody scored in the 97 percentile of the Raven Progressive Matrices test, which is a non-reading test of cognitive processing skills or how a child learns. Cody is the grandson of Ray and Doralee Blanton and Charles and Dot Daves, and the great-grandson of Edith Blanton, all of Sylva. Both his parents are formerly of Sylva.


LINDA HUGHES COLLINS...

of Atlanta, formerly of Jackson County, wrote in to tell her friends that she has been elected a delegate to the 2000 Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, scheduled for Aug. 14-17. Collins, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Hughes, is a member of the State Democratic Committee of Georgia, Cobb County Democratic Women, delegate to several Georgia State Democratic Conventions and has been active with the Democratic Party of Georgia for a number of years.

S. BRYAN MONTEITH...

of Cashiers has been elected a first-level officer of Wachovia Bank in Asheville. He is a branch manager and the son of Rick Monteith and Linda Hedden, both of Cashiers. He received a bachelor's degree from Western Carolina University.

the county honors its seniors, age 90 or better, with a special 90s Birthday Party from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Golden Age Senior Center. Roy Burnette is master of ceremonies with entertainment by Dana Tucker and Becky Green.
