VOLUNTEERS...

are needed this Saturday for a work day at Sylva's Poteet Park starting at 8:30 a.m. Participants are asked to bring tools like hammers, saws, drills, tape measures, extension cords and levels. Work will continue until about 5 p.m.; volunteers may work all or part of the day.


OTHER SATURDAY VOLUNTEER...

efforts include the annual Tuckaseigee River Cleanup and the Sylva town board's trash pickup along Sylva roadways. Volunteers for the river cleanup should meet at Western Carolina University's Hinds University Center at 11 a.m.; roadside cleanup volunteers should gather at Mark Watson Park at 9 a.m.


FANTASY GRAPHICS...

of Sylva is a full-service sign company and advertising agency. Owner Beth Thompson offers all types of signs and vehicle graphics. Thompson was formerly in business with the late Ed Green and now has the company at 305A Old Settlement Road.


WEBSTER BAPTIST...

will hold a spaghetti dinner this Friday, April 14, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the church. Cost is $4 per plate. Take-outs are available. Call 586-4459 to place orders.


THE WORKING MAN AND FANCY LADY,

a shop offering new clothing for men and women, will open Saturday, April 15. Owners John and Sue Grant plan to stock "today's fashions at prices working families can afford," Sue Grant said. The new store is located at 73 W. Main Street next to Carolina Tire. Hours are 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

SMOKY MOUNTAIN PAINT CENTER

SMOKY MOUNTAIN PAINT CENTER...

has expanded to more than double its original size in just six months. The store now offers five lines of paints and stains including Pittsburgh, Duron, Cabot, Sikkens and Perma-Chink. The accessories and rental departments have also been expanded. For information on products and services, call owner David Kelly at 631-2544. Smoky Mountain Paint Center is located on U.S. 441 next to the Woodland Motel.

ALLISON'S CHEVROLET, OLDS, JEEP...

is back in the alignment business. The dealership has a new DST 400 alignment system that uses computer technology to offer customers quick, simplified alignments that are the most accurate available. Call 586-4016 for an appointment. Allison's is located at 1188 W. Main Street in Sylva.


EASTER EGG HUNTS...

are planned this Saturday, April 15, for children ages 2-10. The Cashiers event will be at 10 a.m. at the Community Center and the Sylva hunt will be at 2 p.m. at Mark Watson Park. Kids can meet the Easter Bunny and enter the Best Easter Basket contest. For information, call 586-6333.


MARCH OF DIMES...

WalkAmerica 2000 will be Saturday, April 15, at 10 a.m. Participants should meet at the First Union Parking lot in Sylva.

Christopher Bitz

CHRISTOPHER BITZ, 19,...

great-grandson of the late Don Henry of Jackson County, was recently featured in "Sporting Life" magazine. Bitz shot a bear that nearly killed his father, Brian Bitz of Hoonah, Alaska. Bitz, also the son of Judy Oskarsson Bitz of Hoonah, is studying aviation at Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C.

Charlie Sisti

THE REV. CHARLES SISTI,

a native of Jackson County, has been selected for inclusion in the sixth edition of "Who's Who Among American Teachers, 2000." Only 5 percent of the nation's teachers are so honored. Teachers can only be nominated by students who have been cited for excellence by receiving the "Who's Who" selection while in high school or college. The Rev. Sisti is the son of Emma Jean Sisti and the late Vincent Sisti. He graduated from Sylva-Webster High and is a former pastor of Jarrett Memorial Baptist Church in Dillsboro. He received his bachelor's degree from Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs and his master's in religion from Luther Rice Seminary in Atlanta. Sisti teaches at Hope Christian Academy in Winder, Ga., and does chalk art evangelism by invitation to interested churches.

TOAD IN THE HOLE'S...

grand opening to celebrate its relocation to Cashiers will be Sunday, April 16, from 2 to 6 p.m. The shop is now located at Cashiers East Center. Stop by for refreshments and register for door prizes.
