wants to help everyone banish the winter blues with their special Cajun and Creole dishes at lunch and dinner March 7-11 in honor of Mardi Gras. from The Sylva Herald's online readership poll. Some 66 percent of our Internet readers also read the print version of our paper. Non-subscribers (60 percent) outnumbered subscribers (40 percent), and we had more out-of-state (68 percent) online readers than in-state. Thanks to everyone who participated. REP. PHIL HAIRE...

of Sylva will appear on Wednesday, March 8, from 6-8 p.m. on UNC-TV's Festival 2000. This is Haire's second appearance on the annual fund-raiser to speak on behalf of public television. "I have long supported UNC-TV and their goal to provide quality public television to all North Carolina citizens," said Haire, "and I am honored to be invited to appear again this year." NOMINATIONS...

are open for the prestigious North Carolina Award, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the state. The awards recognize individuals who have made significant contributions in four categories: science, fine arts, literature and public service. Nominations may be submitted by anyone and should be sent to the N.C. Awards Committee, c/o Betty Ray McCain, secretary of cultural resources, 109 E. Jones St., Raleigh, N.C. 27601-2807. LITTER HOTLINE...

Gov. Jim Hunt has established a statewide, toll-free tip line for state residents to report littered highways and waterways, illegal dumps, abandoned vehicles and dilapidated structures. The hotline was established to give people one number to call and report all manner of eyesores. Concerned citizens may call 1-877-883-2011. The line will be accessible 24 hours a day.

Dalton Hall

DALTON KRISTOFER HALL,

age 3, won the title of N.C. Universal Grand Master Feb. 5 in Wilkesboro. The son of Brian and Tracey Hall of Morganton, Dalton is the grandson of Wayne and Shirley Brooks and Bryant and Nettie Hall, all of Sylva. He is the great-grandson of Faye Hall and Agnes Cloer, both of Sylva. He will represent North Carolina in a Las Vegas pageant in November. Dalton won several categories including sportswear, casualwear and most photogenic. Local sponsors include Kathy Mathis of Snip, Dips and Bows and the Jackson County Veterinary Clinic.
