WE'RE TALLYING . . .

the results of our online reader survey, and we expect to have have those in next week. We now know more about our web site visitors, and early counts indicate most live in Jackson County and are regular readers of The Sylva Herald.

COMPOST BINS . . .

are now available locally, said Chad Parker of Jackson County's solid waste office. The ³soil makers² are the size of a large cardboard box (about 3 feet by 3 feet by 4 feet tall), are manufactured from recycled plastic and can be yours for a cost of only $35. The county is offering them to citizens to encourage composting, which eliminates food scraps and vegetable and fruit peelings from the solid waste stream. For information, call Parker at 586-7577.

CROSSROADS . . .

is proud to welcome legendary guitarist Kim Simmonds and the Savoy Brown Blues Band to Sylva Saturday, Feb. 26, along with special guests Carolina Blues All-Stars, featuring guitarists Steve Dennison of Sylva and Kevin Bolick of Franklin, and Karma, a Franklin-based female Beatles cover band. Co-sponsored by Carolina Discount Music, the event is also the third annual Gibson Guitar night. Numerous prizes will be awarded, including a grand prize, a Gibson Acoustic Southern Jumbo worth $2,900, and second prize, an Epiphone AJ-18 limited edition worth $500. Tickets are $15 in advance or $17 at the door. Reserved seating (first six rows) is $20. Tickets are available locally at In Your Ear, 586-6404, and at Crossroads, 631-3322.


NORTHERN JACKSON . . .

County Board of Realtors donated more than $2,500 to charities during the past year. Those contributions included funds to local efforts like the Tuckseigee River Clean-up and the Jackson County Christmas Store, as well as Hurricane Floyd relief and the American Cancer Society.


FORMER RESIDENT . . .

Curtis Hawkins of Chesapeake, Va., has received the Canon Director Achievement Award of 2000, which recognizes achievements of Canon workers who have contributed to the overall success of the company. A cash award accompanied the achievement recognition. The son of Joe Edward and Agnes Hawkins of Whittier, Curtis Hawkins received his business degree from Mars Hill College. He and his wife, Cindee, have a son and two daughters.


ALMOND TWIRLERS . . .

square dance club has announced a series of A-1 classes to be held every first and third Thursday, beginning March 16. The club has dances scheduled on several upcoming Thursdays, Feb. 17, 24 and March 9. For information, call Pam Boaze at 497-6505.
