JACKSON EYE CARE

is featured in our Business Spotlight this week. Dr. Joel Wynne offers comprehensive eye care as well as glasses and contact lenses and treatment of eye disease. His office is located in West Sylva Shopping Center near Harold's Supermarket.

MEATBALLS FOUNDER KAREN MARTAR

has sold her downtown restaurant to Kenneth Stephens and Janene Smith. In an advertisement in this issue, Martar thanks her customers for their support during her 16 years at the restaurant.


A SPAGHETTI DINNER,

sponsored by the Cullowhee/Sylva Kiwanis Club, will be held next Thursday, Feb. 17, from noon until 1 p.m. at the Community Service Center in Sylva. The menu will include homemade meat or vegetarian sauce, salad, garlic bread and dessert. Cost is $5, and proceeds will benefit flood victims, New Century Scholars, a local needy family and HANDS. Carry-outs will be available.


REMEMBER THE VALENTINE'S

dance and auction Saturday night at 9 p.m. at Crossroads. The event, sponsored by the Jackson County Humane Society, will feature music by Oboe Mimosa, and donated items will be auctioned by Karen Martar. All proceeds will go to the Humane Society. Tickets, which cost $10 per person, are available downtown at Crossroads, Meatballs and Lulu's.

WINTER WEATHER

has dealt a crippling blow to area efforts to recover from a severe blood shortage. The American Red Cross has scheduled blood drives locally today (Thursday) at Harris Regional Hospital from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.; and at Wal-Mart Friday, Feb. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. All who can are asked to give the gift of life during this time of critical need, a Red Cross spokesman said.


STANBERRY INSURANCE

has purchased Macon Insurance Agency and now how has three locations ­ Sylva, Franklin and Highlands. Joining the Stanberry team with the purchase are Tom Lane, Phillip Lane, Jeannie Cheek and Janet Neal.


WESTERN-SOUTHERN

Life Insurance Co. will sponsor a visit from WestCare's mobile mammography unit Tuesday, Feb. 15. The unit will be at the company's office at 293 W. Main Street from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. A special reduced price of $65 will include a complete mammography, screening and reading.


AUDITIONS FOR KUDZU PLAYERS'

next production, "Nunsense," will be held Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 14 and 15, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the old Jackson County Courthouse. Those auditioning should prepare one song and bring music. An accompanist will be provided. Those trying for parts may be asked to read at least one monologue from the show. Scripts are available for preview at the Jackson County Public Library. Kudzu needs box office and ushering help for its performances of "Last of the Red Hot Lovers" the next two weekends. Anyone interested may call 631-2888.


SEVERAL HARRAH'S

employees were honored recently for providing superior customer service. Those selected were Tim Chiltoskie, Ed Yashenko, Bonnie Garlock, Jenea Murphy and Kim Winchester. These five, designated "property winners," are now eligible for companywide awards. "I am extremely proud of the five employees our selection committee chose as property winners," said General Manager Jerry Egelus. "The property selection process was extremely difficult because we had so many truly deserving nominees. And what really made the process difficult is that we went from 11 award categories last year down to just four for this year."


DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

crews will close a portion of S.R. 1381 (Hometown Place Road) next week. The road will be closed from its western junction with Business 23 in Dillsboro to S.R. 1380, said DOT's Greg Shuler. The road will be closed for several weeks, Shuler said.


JACK SWANNER,

mill manager at T&S Hardwoods in Sylva, was named to a one-year term as first vice president of the N.C. Forestry Association, a private, non-profit partnership of forest managers, landowners, mill operators, loggers, furniture manufactures and others concerned about the long-term health and productivity of the state's forest resources and the industries they support. Forestry is the state's second-largest manufacturing industry, employing about 146,000 North Carolinians. Swanner was recently elected to a three-year term on the association's board of directors last month.


LEE EVEY

of Springfield, Va., son of Bud and Jo Evey of Sylva, is currently serving as project manager for the Pentagon renovation project, which will cost some $1.2 billion and may take 20 years to complete. The Pentagon, completed in 1943, was designed in a weekend, built in 16 months and cost $83 million, according to a recent story in USA Today.
