Coaching changes highlighted sports stories in 2000

Change was the prevailing theme of Jackson County sports during 2000, and most of the change revolved around coaching staffs.

New basketball coaches were hired for the men's and women's team at Western Carolina. On the high school scene, a new football coach took over at Smoky Mountain, and a new women's basketball coach was named at Blue Ridge.

Some of the changes were voluntary such as Boyce Deitz retiring as Smoky Mountain's football coach. Others were forced as Tom Dillard was fired at Blue Ridge and WCU's Phil Hopkins and Jill Dunn were dismissed.

They were replaced by Cameron Brooks, Jim Yoder, Steve Shurina and Beth Dunkenberger.

New athletic directors were Jeff Compher at Western Carolina and Joe Brooks at Blue Ridge.

Sports in 2000 continued . . .
