Smoky Mountain stops Enka to clinch spot in state playoffs

Trent Dillard (45) had some big runs for Smoky Mountain in Friday's 35-28 win over Enka. Dillard gained 72 yards in nine carries and scored what proved to be the winning touchdown.

Smoky Mountain clinched a spot in the state 3-A football playoffs with a 35-28 win over Enka Friday at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

The Mustangs (6-4, 3-3) finished tied for third in the Western Athletic Conference but tied for first with Erwin among 3-A schools. Erwin gained the WAC's top seed due to its win over SM earlier this season.

The Mustangs made the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time in 10 years. They will travel to Asheville Friday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff in the opening round.
