In future years it may become know as "The Play." Travis Hipps left Pisgah stunned as he set sail on an 80-yard return of a field goal during the third quarter of Friday's 21-14 Mustang victory. The bizarre play tied the score 14-14 even though SM had been held to eight yards of total offense to that point.

Smoky Mountain used a bizarre play to turn the game around and take a bizarre 21-14 victory over Pisgah in the Western Athletic Conference football opener Friday at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

SM (4-2) defeated Pisgah for the first time since 1992.

The Mustangs trailed 14-0 at halftime but drew even midway through the third quarter on a pair of plays by the special teams. At the time, they had only eight yards of total offense and their lone first down was on a penalty.

Defense dominated the night as Pisgah finished with 113 yards of total offense to SM's 109. Rain associated with Tropical Storm Helene fell through most of the game helping to keep the offenses for both teams in check.

Smoky Mountain continued . . .
