Katie Herzog of Cullowhee won first place in the 18 and under female division at the U.S. team kayak tryouts recently on the Ocoee River in Tennessee.
The 17-year-old rising senior at Smoky Mountain High was one of two in her age group to qualify for the Pre-World Competition set for Spain this summer. Herzog said she will not make the trip to Spain because it would be on such short notice. She hopes to qualify for next summer's World Championships also in Spain.
