Tom Dillard, women's basketball coach at Blue Ridge the past four years, was denied tenure at a May 24 meeting of the Jackson County school board.

The decision in effect means Dillard is fired from his teaching and coaching positions. The vote was 4-0 with board member Mary Jane Dillard abstaining.

Dillard is concluding his first year as the school's athletic director. He was softball coach three seasons but resigned from that position earlier this year.

Dillard has been a math teacher his four years at Blue Ridge.

His basketball record was 60-48. The Lady Bobcats won Far West Conference championships his first two years before being realigned with larger schools into the Smoky Mountain East Conference.
