Family members of the late Jeff Owen accepted his plaque Sunday commemorating his induction into the Jackson County Athletic Hall of Fame. They included, from left: his mother, Mary Owen; his daughter, Jessica Owen, banquet speaker and former NFL quarterback Heath Shuler; his son, Brett Owen; his brother, Alton Owen; and his high school football and baseball coach and Hall of Fame Committee Chairman Babe Howell.

The Jackson County Athletic Hall of Fame held its eighth annual banquet and induction ceremony Sunday before a sellout crowd at the Sylva Comfort Inn.

This year's induction class included Steve Dillard, Joe Hicks and the late Jeff Owen.

The program began with a welcome from Brandon Stephens, WRGC radio sports announcer, and the invocation by the Rev. Mike Dellinger, pastor of Webster Baptist Church.

Heath Shuler, a former quarterback with the Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints and Oakland Raiders, was the featured speaker. The former Tennessee star and Heisman Trophy runner-up told the crowd that success comes from the heart.
