Derrick Hawk pitched a one-hitter for six innings and Matt Hopkins blasted a grand slam home run leading Smoky Mountain to an 8-0 Western Athletic Conference victory over Enka March 28 at the SM field.
"It was about the best overall we've played all year with timely hitting and outstanding pitching," Coach Tim Hawkins said. "We also played good defense."
Hawk (5-1) allowed only one base runner, a bloop single to right by Jamie Bohanon in the fifth. He was thrown out attempting to steal by catcher Brad McAbee as Hawk faced the minimum 18 batters. He struck out 10.
"It's not often you have a pitcher go six innings and face the minimum," Hawkins said. "Derrick had outstanding stuff."
