Tara Green scores two of her 17 points for Smoky Mountain in last week's 55-36 victory over Franklin. The Lady Mustangs were upset by Madison Saturday but bounced back Tuesday with a win over Tuscola to go to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Smoky Mountain's women maintained their hold on first place in the Western Athletic Conference with a 55-36 victory over Franklin on Jan. 5 at the SM gym.

Tara Green scored 17 points as the Lady Mustangs improved to 3-0 in the league. Elexis Smith added 11 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

Franklin's Crystal Tallent scored 14 points.

Both teams displayed solid defense, but SM rode Green's three-point shooting in the latter part of the first half to build a 12-point margin at intermission. The lead stayed in double digits the rest of the way.

"We had a strong defensive effort," Coach Cindi Simmons said. "We changed from man-to-man to zone, and both worked well."

The Lady Panthers never led although they tied the game twice in the first period. The last occasion was 9-9 on Tallent's basket with 37 seconds on the clock.

A three-pointer by Nichole Jones with 12 seconds left put the Lady Mustangs ahead for good 12-9. That was the margin at the quarter break.
