Sixth-seeded Mercer upset third-seeded Western Carolina 25-20, 31-29, 25-21, 25-14, 15-10 Friday in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Volleyball Tournament at Wofford.
The Lady Cats ended the season 17-13.
WCU’s Abigail Veit (12 kills, 12 digs) and Hannah Price (35 assists, 10 digs) had double-doubles. Haley Multerer put down 10 kills. Meagan Sanchez and Merry Gebel came up with 14 and 13 assists, respectively.
The Southern Conference honored Western Carolina head coach Karen Glover, senior libero Meagan Sanchez and sophomore outside hitter Merry Gebel on Wednesday afternoon as the league announced its annual postseason volleyball awards.
Sanchez, a senior from Bristow, Virginia, was named Southern Conference Libero of the Year and first team all-conference. She led the league with 596 digs and 5.60 digs per set, which ranks eighth nationally, during the regular season.
Gebel, a sophomore from Wildwood, Missouri, was selected second team all-conference after averaging 3.37 kills and 2.93 digs per set during the regular season.
Karen Glover, who is in her ninth season at the helm, was voted Southern Conference Coach of the Year. The team was picked to finish eighth in the preseason.
