Western Carolina’s volleyball team won a pair of recent home Southern Conference matches.

The Lady Cats (16-9, 10-2) are third in the league.

Senior libero Meagan Sanchez was named conference defensive player of the month for October. It’s the second straight time she won the award.

WCU swept UT-Chattanooga 25-15, 25-12, 25-18 Friday. Merry Gebel had 10 kills and 10 digs. Hannah Price handed out 33 assists. Sanchez came up with 12 digs, and Abigail Veit had 10.

Western defeated Mercer 25-8, 25-27, 25-20, 25-11 Saturday. Veit recorded 14 kills and 11 digs, and Price totaled 30 assists and 14 digs. Sanchez led in digs with 17.

Sanchez averaged 5.48 digs per set during October. Her 477 digs rank ninth nationally.
