Western Carolina University men’s basketball incoming freshman Nicholas Evtimov was named to the France men’s under-19 (U19) World Cup team for the upcoming FIBA World Cup scheduled for June 29-July 7 in Heraklion, Greece. Evtimov is making his international basketball debut on a French squad that finished in third place at the 2018 FIBA U18 European Championship.
“Making the national team feels like the greatest honor because you get to represent your whole country and get to play not only for the name on the back, but most importantly for the name on the front (of the jersey),” Evtimov said. “Everyone has the same goal and that is to win. It’s an amazing opportunity and experience to be part of something like that.”
A former McDonald’s All-American and North Carolina standout, Evtimov’s father, Vassil, played at the FIBA Eurobasket in 2001 for France and in 2009 for Bulgaria.
The younger Evtimov attended Greensboro Day School during his senior year and averaged 11.2 points and 6.2 rebounds as he claimed a spot on the All-Piedmont Triad Conference team as well as the HSXTRA.com All-Area second team.
France opens the World Cup against Puerto Rico on June 29 and faces China the following day before wrapping up group play against Serbia on July 2. The round of 16 is scheduled for July 3 with quarterfinals on July 5, semifinals on July 6 and the finals on July 7. Games will be streamed on the FIBA YouTube page.
