Western Carolina’s volleyball team went 2-1 on a trip to Arizona in the Grand Canyon Invitational.

Merry Gebel and Johnna Robinson represented the Lady Cats (2-3) on the all-tournament team. Gebel totaled 29 kills and 36 digs, while Robinson finished with 19 kills and 15 blocks.

Grand Canyon, the host school, downed Western 25-17, 25-19, 25-21 Friday. WCU’s Levi Weidmann and Bailey Hartsough both put down seven kills. Sydney Carlson and Sarah Janourova handed out 15 and 12 assists, respectively. Destinee Dorsey came up with 16 digs, and Ollie Henderson had 11.

The Lady Cats went the distance in Saturday’s first match and emerged with their initial victory of the season 23-25, 25-23, 27-29, 25-14, 15-11 over Rider. Robinson and Makenzie White both had 12 kills, and Gebel added 11. Carlson totaled 31 assists, and Janourova had 10. Dorsey was tops in digs with 19, followed by Gebel with 18, Henderson with 13 and Bridgette Merrill with 12.

WCU swept Villanova 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 later Saturday. Gebel put down 14 kills to go with 10 digs, and Carlson had 32 assists. Dorsey came up with 16 digs, and Merrill had 11.
