Western Carolina’s cross country teams opened their seasons Friday in the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State.

The Florida State men and women won the event. There were 12 men’s teams and 13 for the women.

Kate Mattison had the highest finish for WCU as she was 23rd in the women’s 5K in 18:16.19. Completing the Lady Cats top seven were:

Sydney Runyan, 59th, 19:49.40; Alesea Caldwell, 61st, 19:48.63; Madelyn Duffield, 62nd, 19:50.18; Sara Klemm, 67th, 19:55.16; Madeleine Walker, 73rd, 20:01.86; and Isabelle Broman-Fulks, 95th, 20:31.81.

Will Mitchell paced the Catamount men in the 8K as he was 41st in 26:31.71. Rounding out Western’s top seven were:

Justin Hayes, 46th, 26:42.48; Drew Zink, 50th, 26:51.13; Clay Summers, 88th, 28:17.06; Jalen Elwell, 93rd, 28:35.10; John Davis, 105th, 29:13.22; and Nicholas Kiser, 109th, 29:19.94.

The next race for WCU will be Oct. 2 at the Asics/Alexander Invite in Fairburn, Georgia.
