Only one goal was scored in both contests combined, but Western Carolina’s defense was strong enough for the Lady Cats (3-2-1) to emerge with a win and a tie in non-conference soccer action.

Valentine Pursey scored the only goal with 4:09 elapsed off an assist from Kirsten Hahn as Western won 1-0 last Thursday at Davidson.

The Lady Wildcats had an 11-9 edge in shots. WCU’s Melody Mezzina made six saves, including one in the closing seconds to secure the win. Mary Grace Bunch had five for Davidson.

The Lady Cats and Longwood battled to a scoreless tie in double overtime Sunday at the Catamount Soccer Complex.

Western dominated in shots 28-9 but could not find the back of the net as Jordan Horacek made 13 saves for the Lady Lancers. Mezzina had five for WCU.
