Jesse Norman, Western Carolina’s track and field coach, has announced the addition of 11 athletes for the 2019-20 indoor and 2020 outdoor seasons.

Western Carolina defeated Davidson and lost to UNC-Charlotte in a pair of recent road non-conference soccer games.

Western Carolina’s women finished fifth, and the men were eighth out of nine teams as the cross country season got underway Aug. 30 with the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State.

Western Carolina’s volleyball team lost two of three matches over the weekend in the Windy City Invitational hosted by Chicago State.

Mercer scored two touchdowns in the first three and a half minutes Saturday and built a 41-14 halftime lead before coasting to a 49-27 Southern Conference win over Western Carolina in the football season opener.

After opening the season with a Southern Conference loss to Mercer, Western Carolina’s football team will take a step up in competition Saturday with a game at N.C. State of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Western Carolina’s men’s and women’s cross country teams will start their seasons Friday in the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State.

Freshman Summit Dann scored the game-winning goal with 59 seconds left Sunday as Western Carolina opened its season with a 2-1 victory over Gardner-Webb at the Catamount Soccer Complex.

Already on the preseason watch list for the top offensive player honor in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision – the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award – Western Carolina quarterback Tyrie Adams was chosen for a second national award watch list.

Western Carolina rising junior baseball player Justice Bigbie has been named Northwoods League Most Valuable Player and was one of 30 players selected as postseason all-stars in the wooden-bat league.

For a second consecutive summer, Western Carolina Coach Bobby Moranda was selected to take part in the National Team Development Program and the trials for the national team spearheaded by USA Baseball.

Western Carolina’s soccer team will play nine home games and nine on the road, according to a schedule released by Coach Chad Miller.

All nine members of Western Carolina’s tennis team have been named Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Three Western Carolina football games will be included in the Ingles Southern Conference Game of the Week package, which was announced Monday.
