Smoky Mountain’s Michael Todd puts up a shot in last week’s 55-51 win over Brevard.

Smoky Mountain avenged a loss from a week earlier by edging Brevard 55-51 in Mountain Six Conference men’s basketball action Feb. 4 at the SM gym.

Conner Seagraves hit four three-pointers and finished with 16 points for the Mustangs. Zeb Sink added 11 points.

Drew Scott paced the Blue Devils with 22 points, and Joe Powell had 13.

“It was the opposite of the first time we played them,” Coach Adam Phillips said. “We made shots down the stretch. Conner hit a big three late, and we got stops when we needed them. It was a tough game coming off the loss at Brevard, but we made plays when we needed to.”

“It was a big win to turn around two losses we had back to back,” Michael Todd said. “We played together really well. We had just lost to them, and we wanted to play them again as soon as we could. Offensively, it wasn’t going either team’s way with missed shots or turnovers, but defensively we played really well together and held them under 60 points.”

The game was close all the way as neither team led by more than five points until just more than a minute remained.

There were seven lead changes and two ties in the first quarter. It ended with SM on top 14-13 when Hunter Cabe scored with two seconds left.

His basket with 5:02 to play in the half gave the Mustangs a 20-17 edge.

The Devils were up 24-23 at halftime after Powell scored with six seconds left.

Seagraves’ three-pointer gave SM a 35-30 lead with 4:26 to play in the third quarter.

Brevard pulled into a 38-38 tie when Powell scored at the 1:42 mark.

Seagraves’ trey put the Mustangs on top 41-38 with 1:27 on the clock, and they led 42-41 entering the fourth period.

Powell’s three-pointer gave the Devils a 44-42 edge at the 6:19 mark.

SM took the lead for good at 46-44 on Sink’s tip-in with 5:11 on the clock.

His layup with 44 seconds left resulted in the game’s biggest lead, 55-46.

In addition to his four three-pointers Seagraves was four of four from the line. Sink made five field goals, including a trey.

Cabe finished with eight points, Parker Flynn added seven, Mitch Wike and Michael Todd both netted four, Clayton Frady scored three and Jameson Madden had two.

The Mustang JVs won 53-46. Max Buchanan scored 13 points.

After a first quarter 14-14 tie, SM led 30-18 at halftime and 43-26 through three periods.

“They beat us by 31 last week,” Coach Tyler Mulligan said. “We came back and avenged that loss. We played really well. What helps us is when we have things going on the defensive end. We came out and played really hard.”
