Smoky Mountain’s women’s golf team opened its season Aug. 20 with a 162-174 victory over Franklin at Highlands Country Club.

“Overall, it was a good day for us,” Coach Jason Melvin said. “We technically finished first as a team, but individually we all could have played much better.”

Madison Broom led the Lady Mustangs with a 51. Autumn Burtt shot 54, and Allison Macke and Maddie Stillwell tied for the third scoring position at 57.

“Highlands Country Club is a beautiful course and it also presents some very good challenges, especially for our first match,” Melvin said. “I think everyone realized various areas of their game that we need to focus on in practice.”

Highlands’ Anna Stiehler was the medalist with a 47, but the Lady Highlanders did not have the minimum of three golfers required to qualify for team standings.

“I think it was a good first match in the sense of we learned to deal with some adversity that might come up again this season, such as playing through heavy rain, but I’m very proud of how everyone fought through without giving up,” Melvin said. “I’m excited to see what this team can accomplish this season.”
