Brevard breezed to a 25-14, 25-12, 25-15 Mountain Six Conference volleyball victory over Smoky Mountain last Thursday at Brevard.
“It came down to our heart wasn’t in it,” Coach Megan Dezarn said. “I didn’t feel like we were as energetic or enthusiastic as we needed to be, especially when we are playing a team as good as Brevard is. You’re going to have to go above and beyond your normal play to compete and potentially win against a team like that.”
The Lady Devils broke a tie to lead 8-4 in the first set with a 4-0 run. They ended the set with a 5-1 spurt.
Brevard scored 11 unanswered points for an 11-1 advantage in the second set. Four straight points made it 16-3. SM’s Faith Shuler served three points, including an ace, leaving the deficit 20-10 before Brevard clinched the set.
Five consecutive points put the Lady Devils up 11-6 in the third set. A 6-0 run increased the margin to 21-11.
Ella Gamble and Caroline Cowan both had four service points. Gamble was perfect in eight serves, while Natalie Parris and Kennedy Stewman didn’t miss in six. Team serving was 88.4 percent.
Brevard won the JV match 25-13, 25-10.
“We faced a tough Brevard team,” Coach Melissa Hill said. “They are good serve receivers and hit the ball well. We did not do as well adjusting as we normally do.”
