Smoky Mountain’s women finished fourth and the men were fifth at the Carney Classic hosted by Hayesville last Thursday at Lake Chatuge.
SM’s Tyler Watterson came in second out of 138 runners for the men with a time of 17:12. Completing the Mustangs top five were:
Caleb Phillips, 43rd, 20:45; Henry Hanks, 44th, 20:46; Parker Smith, 45th, 20:47; and Ben Saunooke, 47th, 20:53.
Union County, Georgia won the meet with 39 points to Murphy’s 60. Hayesville was third with 82, followed by Towns County, Georgia (98) and SM (165). There were 13 teams.
Lily Buenting led the Lady Mustangs as she was 10th among 104 runners in 23:13. Rounding out SM’s top five were:
Anna Morgan, 14th, 23:24; Lucy McRae, 34th, 25:27; Lydia Norman, 41st, 25:25; and Maia Wilde, 46th, 26:10.
Hayesville won the meet with 62 points to Union County’s 90. Swain was third with 123, followed closely by SM (124) and Fannin County, Georgia (125).
“It was a beautiful scene,” Coach Pam Shuler said. “It was very hot, and the kids ran very well under extreme conditions. It’s a very steep hill going up the front of the dam, and they have a mile across the top of the dam. It’s one of the hardest courses we run. I’m real pleased with the results and times.”
