Smoky Mountain’s wrestlers went 4-1 last week, leaving the Mustangs 4-3 overall.
SM defeated Andrews 66-6 and Union County (Ga.) 46-30 Nov. 27 at Andrews. Andrews’ only win was by forfeit, and two of Union County’s five wins were by forfeit.
“We had a good night,” Coach Tony Moody said. “We’re almost at full strength, and had a good showing. Everyone won at least one match.”
Will Frady and Seth Ledford both wrestled up to the heavyweight division in one match. Frady won a 3-2 decision against Andrews, and Ledford won by pin. They both won by pin at 220.
Gabe Rodriguez (170) had a pin and major decision, while Sam Hudson (120) won by pin and decision. Also winning two matches were Hunter Lassiter (126), Ki French (145), Brad Arnold (195), Isaac Gunter (132) and Joel Francis (138). Going 1-1 were Tucker Watterson (113), Damon Figueroa (160) and Elijah Rodriguez (152).
Friday at Mountain Heritage, the Mustangs defeated Owen 45-28 and Franklin 54-21. They lost to Heritage 42-33.
“The kids wrestled tough,” Moody said. “I feel like we let the last match against Mountain Heritage slip away, but we still had a good showing overall. We are getting better everyday.”
The Franklin match will not count in Mountain Six Conference standings.
Lassiter (126) and Gunter (132) pinned their opponents against Owen. Figueroa (170) won a 9-4 decision. Winning by forfeit were Eli Grasty (220), Ledford (285), Hunter Gauthier (106), Hudson (113) and Brendan Millsaps (120).
The only contested matches won by SM against Franklin were pins by Figueroa and Ledford. Winning by forfeit were Grasty, Gauthier, Hudson, Millsaps, Lassiter, Gunter and Gabe Rodriguez.
The Mustangs’ lone pin against Heritage was by Gunter. Grasty took a 4-2 decision at 285. Winning by forfeit were Gauthier, Hudson, Lassiter and Gabe Rodriguez.
