West Wilkes defeated Smoky Mountain 25-13, 25-11, 25-10 Saturday in the first round of the state 2-A volleyball playoffs at Millers Creek.

The Lady Mustangs ended the season 7-17.

“Defensively, we did a good job on serve receive and touching a lot of blocks, but offensively we struggled,” Coach Megan Dezarn said. “They are a very good all-around team and a very strong offensive team to go up against.”

The Lady Blackhawks jumped to big leads early in each set and coasted from there.

SM managed just six offensive points in the match, and four were in the first set.

Alyssa Parker served nine points putting West up 11-1 in the first set.

In set two, it was Cheyanne Clonch with six points giving the Lady Blackhawks a 10-2 advantage.

West led 7-0 in the third set after Jamesyn Bell served six points.

Kennedy Stewman had three service points for the Lady Mustangs. Not missing a serve were Ella Gamble and Faith Shuler (four apiece) and Natalie Parris and Alexa Anderson (three each). Team serving was 91.7 percent.

“I love this group, and they’ve been awesome to coach,” Dezarn said. “I wish my seniors the best of luck in their new adventures.”
