Smoky Mountain took the lead for good in the first quarter Friday and held off a couple of runs for a 54-42 Mountain Six Conference women’s basketball victory at Brevard.

Natalie Parris scored 18 points to go with eight rebounds and six steals for the Lady Mustangs (5-5, 5-3) Macy Wike added 15 points.

Liz Chapman and Emma Berry paced the Lady Devils with 19 and 11 points, respectively.

“We ran into a Brevard team that we can’t take for granted,” Coach Ollin Dunford said. “They are very capable. We found ourselves struggling to maintain the lead. That’s always a hard place to play.”

SM ran off 11 straight points, including five by Parris, for a 13-5 lead with 2:18 to play in the first period, which ended with the margin 13-8.

The Lady Mustangs scored the second quarter’s first eight points, including four by Parris, for a 21-8 lead with there minutes to go in the half.

They led 25-13 at halftime.

Chapman scored five and Shaniya Cook had four in an 11-2 spurt cutting the gap to 30-26 with 2:51 to play in the third period.

Chapman’s three-pointer narrowed the deficit to 32-29 at the 1:05 mark.

SM recovered to lead 37-29 entering the fourth quarter.

Berry’s three-pointer brought the Lady Devils within 46-40 with 2:33 to play.

The Lady Mustangs scored the next eight points, including four by Kennedy Stewman, for a 54-40 lead with 32 seconds remaining.

Parris made six field goals, including two three-pointers, and four free throws. Wike hit five field goals, including a trey, and was four of four from the line.

Stewman finished with seven points, Xaila Spencer added six, Hannah Huddleston scored four, Addison Buchanan had three and Allison Macke made a foul shot.
