Audra Morgan scored three goals, and East Henderson pulled away for a 6-3 Mountain Six Conference soccer victory over Smoky Mountain on April 29 at East.
“We had a lot of good effort,” Coach Mark Sides said. “We were still hanging in there with about 11 minutes left in the game then they got those other two goals.”
The Lady Eagles got off to a fast start and took a 2-0 lead. Deanna McCrary scored at the 8:29 mark, and Leah Marr connected at the 11:01 mark.
Anna Morgan rebounded a missed shot and scored at the 27:54 mark leaving SM down 2-1 at halftime.
The Lady Mustangs tied it 2-2 at the 46:42 mark when the keeper cleared the ball but it went to Anna Morgan, who had an open net and put the ball in.
Audra Morgan scored two goals in just more than two and a half minutes as East took the lead for good at 4-2. They came at the 55:17 and 57:34 marks.
Anna Morgan’s penalty kick after a foul in the box cut the gap to 4-3 at the 68:31 mark.
The Lady Eagles put the game away with a pair of late goals. Audra Morgan scored at the 73:05 mark, and Aubrie Pressley did likewise at the 78:02 mark.
East had a 23-11 advantage in shots. SM’s Willow Messer made nine saves, and Reanna Chapman had five for the Lady Eagles.
“A lot of it was keeping up with some of the girls’ speed,” Sides said of the shot differential. “The girl East had up top was really fast. Toward the end of the game we were getting a little tired. We made a few bad decisions, and East capitalized on those.”
