Smoky Mountain’s Caroline Spilliards and Josh Handy qualified for the State 2-A Track Meet with their performances in the Western 2-A Regionals held Friday at East Burke.

The state meet is set for Saturday at N.C. A&T in Greensboro.

Spilliards will be running in the 100-meter hurdles after placing fourth at regionals in 17.48.

Handy qualified for state by finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash in 23.45.

Spilliards also competed in the 300 hurdles and was seventh in 52.65.

Handy was seventh in the 100 dash in 11.69.

Others competing for the women included:

3,200 relay – Lily Buenting, Maia Wilde, Vivian Bell, Sophia Ammons, sixth, 11:06.05.

800 run – Buenting, seventh, 2:38.01; Ammons, eighth, 2:40.7.

3,200 run – Wilde, 10th, 15:12.69.

Coach Pam Shuler noted that the 3,200 relay team shaved six seconds off its best previous time of the season.

For the men, Da’Mare Williams was eighth in the 110 hurdles in 19.0 and 10th in the 300 hurdles in 51.35.

“Smoky Mountain is extremely proud of these athletes and the hard work they put in all season,” Shuler said. “Even when school was officially over, their season was not completed and practice continued in order to prepare for the conference meet and the regional meet.”
