Brevard turned back Smoky Mountain 65-38 in a Mountain Six Conference men’s basketball game Friday at Brevard.
Jaylen Carver scored 13 points for the Blue Devils, followed by Laz Hunter with 11 and Joe Powell with 10.
The Mustangs (2-8, 1-7) were led by Jed West with 14 points.
“I thought our kids battled,” said Zeb Capps, acting coach. “We got after it pretty good. Brevard hit some shots that hurt. We struggled finishing around the rim. At times we were stagnant offensively.”
West scored SM’s first five points for a 5-1 lead three minutes into the game.
Carver’s basket with 2:38 to play in the first quarter put Brevard ahead to stay at 9-8.
The Devils finished the period on an 8-2 run, including a pair of three-pointers by Powell, for a 19-11 advantage.
The teams combined for just 10 points in the second quarter, which ended with Brevard leading 25-16.
The Devils closed the third quarter on a 12-2 spurt, including five by Sammy Kessinger, to lead 44-24.
The game’s biggest margin was 65-36 after Carver’s layup with 35 seconds to play.
West’s points came on five field goals, and four free throws.
Ryan Waliezer added seven points, Hunter Cabe and Lawson Wike followed with six apiece, Max Buchanan scored three and Nacoma Driver had two.
Capps singled out Waliezer.
“He’s the glue of the team and does such a great job,” the coach said.
He also cited Cabe for his effort.
The Mustang JVs fell to 3-7 with a 44-34 loss. SM led 9-4 after the first quarter but trailed 21-15 at halftime and 29-24 going into the fourth period.
Carson Seagraves scored nine points.
“Our effort in the first quarter was really good,” Capps said. “They went to a 1-3-1 zone, and we had a really hard time getting the ball in the middle. Our effort wasn’t what it needed to be in the second half.”
