Smoky Mountain’s Manuel Herevia qualified for the State 1-A/2-A Indoor Track Meet in the men’s shot put on Feb. 3 at Cherokee.
He finished second at 42-0, which was an improvement of 5 feet, according to Coach Libby McRae.
He joins Anna Morgan (women’s 500 dash) and the women’s 3,200 relay team of Morgan, Lindsey Stack, Becky Pechmann and Maia Wilde, who will be going to state.
The state meet will start at 4 p.m. Saturday at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem. While the sport is called indoor track, this will mark the first time any SM competitors have taken part in a meet held inside this season.
McRae only took four participants who were close to qualifying to the Cherokee meet.
Daniel Melton was second in the men’s 300 dash in 38.0. He dropped 2 seconds in the past three weeks and missed qualifying by .7 seconds.
Lydia Norman was second in the women’s long jump with a leap of 13-7.5.
Aaron Guadarrama was seventh in the men’s shot put at 33-11.5.
The Mustang men were sixth among seven teams, and the women were fifth out of six teams. The Cherokee men and Murphy women won the meet.
