Greene Central’s Kristen Colie and McKinsey Harper defeated Smoky Mountain’s Ella Harris and Natalie Partain 6-1, 6-3 Friday in the first round of the State 2-A Tennis Tournament at Cary Tennis Park.

“Colie and Harper jumped on us right out of the gate, and we struggled to get back on top,” Coach Ashley Doolin said. “It was one of those situations where the girls felt like nothing was working and they couldn’t catch a break.”

She noted that by reaching the state tourney Harris and Partain were in the top 16 of 2-A doubles teams in the state.

“That’s a big accomplishment in itself,” Doolin said. “They don’t have anything to hang their heads about. They had a successful season, and we are proud of them and their hard work.”

Foard’s Alexis Wolgemuth and Hannah Cummings, the duo that defeated Harris and Partain in the regionals, won the state championship. Runner-up was the Mountain Six Conference team of Hendersonville’s Olivia Pursley and Anna Trace.
