The Walters State baseball team, which includes former Smoky Mountain pitcher Zebby Matthews, has reached the winners’ bracket finals of the National Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The Senators were scheduled to play Central Arkansas or Iowa Western at 9:30 p.m. Eastern time Wednesday. Results were not known at press time.

Walters State will play again today (Thursday) in the double-elimination tournament.

The championship round will start Friday. If an extra game is needed, it will be Saturday.

The Senators opened the event last Saturday with a 16-12 win over Cowley (Kansas) before rallying Monday to edge Navarro (Texas) 6-5.

Matthews pitched the first five and a third innings against Navarro. He allowed eight hits, four earned runs and two walks while striking out five.
