Waynesville edged Smoky Mountain 26-20 in double overtime in middle school football action last Thursday at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.

Neither team score in the first OT, and the Mustangs (4-2) were stopped in the second extra period before the Mountaineers scored the winning touchdown.

SM rallied from a 20-6 halftime deficit to force OT. Hayden Moore scored from the 2 cutting the gap to 20-12. After a blocked punt, Isaiah McNeely scored from the 7. Moore added the two-point conversion for a 20-20 tie.

McNeely scored on a 32-yard run in the first half.

“It was a great game to be a part of,” Coach Tony Moody said. “The kids played great defense. Conner Moore and Joe Bryant Hill dominated on the defensive side of the ball. We fell just short due to some crucial calls, but that’s how it goes sometimes. I was really proud of the effort the kids gave.”
