Smoky Mountain scored on nine of 10 possessions Friday on the way to a 62-0 rout of Madison in non-conference football action at Carr Hooper Stadium/Babe Howell Field.
The Mustangs (3-2) missed by one point of tying the school record 63 points they scored last week against Rosman.
Will Frady carried just six times, but four of them went for touchdowns. He totaled 138 yards.
Dustin Stephens added 122 yards and two TDs in five attempts.
Both of Chris Wilburn’s two carries went for scores totaling 63 yards.
Forrest Ward carried five times for 44 yards.
The team compiled 367 yards in 18 rushes.
Caleb Lominac completed three of seven passes for 30 yards and a score. Darien Bird had two catches for 25 yards and a TD.
The team scored in three or fewer plays seven times. The other two possessions for TDs took four and five plays.
Madison’s Caden Hilemon completed 13 of 22 passes for 87 yards. Elijah Tipton had four catches for 43 yards.
Zander Fender was the Patriots’ top rusher with 40 yards in 21 carries.
A running clock was used throughout the second half since the halftime margin exceeded 42 points.
Madison moved the ball on the game’s first possession, and Hilemon completed a 14-yard pass to Tipton on fourth down.
Moments later, Stephens stripped Clay Hilemon of the ball after a reception and had a 26-yard return to the Patriot 44. Frady scored on the next play setting the rout in motion. Hunter Pressley, who was seven of seven on extra points, made it 7-0 with 7:47 to play in the first quarter.
Stephens ran for 23 yards on the first play after a punt. Frady had a 13-yard run and completed the five-play, 68-yard drive with a 34-yard run for a 14-0 margin with 1:47 remaining in the first period.
Cole James intercepted Caden Hilemon’s pass two plays after the kickoff at the Madison 27. Stephens scored on a 23-yard run two plays later building the lead to 21-0 with 8.1 seconds left in the first stanza.
The Patriots’ next possession ended when Lawson Wike recovered Caden Hilemon’s fumble at the Madison 18.
Frady scored from there three plays later making it 28-0 with 10:46 to go in the half.
A shanked punt gave SM the ball at the Patriot 21. Lominac hit Bird on a TD pass from that spot two plays later extending the lead to 35-0 at the 9:11 mark.
A short punt plus a penalty gave the Mustangs the ball at the Madison 29. Frady gained 18 yards on the first play and scored from 11 yards out. Zeke Sink’s PAT put the margin at 42-0 with 6:46 on the clock.
The Patriots were stopped on downs at their 34. The only possession when SM failed to score ended when Justin Sprinkle recovered Stephens’ fumble at the 32.
On the first play of the second half, Stephens ripped off a 70-yard TD run for a 49-0 lead with 10:45 to play in the third quarter.
Dalton Buchanan ended a Madison drive when he recovered Blaize Littrell’s fumble at the SM 33.
Ward gained 14 and 11 yards before Wilburn scored on a 29-yard run. Sink missed the PAT leaving the margin 55-0 with 10:50 to go in the game.
The Mustangs’ final drive took four plays and covered 53 yards. Ward started it with a 13-yard run, and Wilburn capped it by going in from 34 yards out for a 62-0 lead at the 2:30 mark.
