Mustang golfers have two matches

Smoky Mountain’s golfers took part in a pair of matches last week.

The Mustangs finished second at Springdale on March 7 and were third at Laurel Ridge last Thursday.

Pisgah shot 159 at Springdale to SM’s 168. Franklin (174) was third with Enka (178) fourth.

Pisgah’s Micah Devlin was the medalist with a 36.

The Mustangs took the next two spots with Cameron Fowler second at 37 and Tanner Gerrety third at 41. Also in scoring positions were Matthew Brown (44) and Caleb Borchelt (46).

Pisgah won at Laurel Ridge as the Bears shot 164 to Tuscola’s (178). SM was third at 183, followed by Franklin (186) and East Henderson (213).

Tuscola’s Jacob Edwards was medalist with a 38.

Fowler and Gerrety tied for third at 42. Also scoring for the Mustangs were Brown (48) and Caleb Coggins (51).

“I thought we put together two goods rounds,” Coach Zeb Capps said. “The course conditions were good at Laurel Ridge, but they were very tough. We faced some adversity early, but we did a good job managing the course.”

He said Gerrety was consistent in both matches.

“We played lights out at Springdale,” Capps said. “Pisgah just had two kids that shot 40 and 43 and the medalist. For us it’s just about trying to get rid of a bad hole here and there. I really like our position right now. The key is going to be peaking at the right moment.”
