Shortstop Kayleigh Marr throws out a runner in Smoky Mountain’s season-opening victory last week.

A two-run single by Gracie-Lee Irons in the sixth inning gave Smoky Mountain a 4-2 lead, and the Lady Mustangs held on for a 4-3 Mountain Seven Conference victory over East Henderson in the softball season opener March 1 at the Webster Field.
A single by Elle Wahnetah and an error preceded the base hit by Irons, a freshman.
“I think that was a big turning point for our girls, especially with the first game being a conference game,” Coach Morgan Dillard said. “That’s like a double positive for us. We have a young team, and it was a really big momentum change for us early in the season.”
Wahnetah, another freshman, pitched a complete game for the win. She allowed seven hits and no walks and struck out nine.
Kaylie Parris, also a freshman, scored two of the runs as a courtesy runner.
“That was Elle’s first game,” Dillard said. “We were just asking her to work hard, and she did. She trusted her defense to stand behind her.”
Kayleigh Marr and Mica Tiger-Harlan were both two of three for the Lady Mustangs.
The Lady Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the second on Caden Gibbs’ RBI single and an error.
SM cut the gap to 2-1 in the second. Wahnetah walked, and the run eventually scored on a wild pitch.
The Lady Mustangs tied it 2-2 in the third. Marr walked, moved up on Abby Branning’s sacrifice and scored on Tiger-Harlan’s single.
East scored on an error in the seventh, and the tying run was on second when Wahnetah struck out the last two batters.
Ashland Palmer and Kinsley Constance both has two hits for East.
